An exhibition of Artworks by Asmi Udassi using ‘Maa Durga’ as a metaphor for Courage.

Maa Durga is also identified as “Adi Shakti” (meaning eternal strength) and various other names. As per Hindu mythology, she is the warrior goddess, who is prominently known as a savior fighting against evil for universal good and righteousness, justifying her name Durga, which means “invincible” or beyond reach.

Courage is needed at every step of the way for the sheer existence of human life and survival. Asmi is trying to convey through her artwork that Durga lies within all of us and comes to the fore when needed. Each of the 13 paintings is meant to be a reminder of the positivity and inner strength, which lies within us and can help us to fight myriads of negative thoughts and insecurities clouding our mind and judgment.

The Artist:

Emotions and feelings fascinate Asmi Udassi. She is a curious person, with a human mind and human behavior as her favorite subjects. Asmi comes across as a bubbly character, but beneath her lighthearted surface lies a very strong, brave woman who fought against all odds to make her dream exhibition come true.

She moved to Mumbai after marriage, where besides completing her Chartered Accountancy, her passion for art and painting took center stage. She grasped on every opportunity to learn arts from teachers like Sir Kashinath Salve, Sir Narendra Pawaskar & Sir Anil Parande, until she finally met her true mentor Sir Pramod Kurlekar. She continued pursuing her passion & working on her artworks, despite moving homes multiple times in a short span of 7 years.

It was in Hong Kong where the idea of “Durga – The Courage” was conceived & she created her first piece of art of Durga series, depicting feminism and beauty. Soon after, she had to relocate to Manila, where she currently resides with her husband and her two children; but she continued creating 12 more wondrous paintings of Durga.

Finally, when she was ready with the whole series, she decided to hold her first exhibition at the Hong Kong Visual Art center, the place where it all started.

The Movement :

‘Durga – The Beauty’ Painting, 30” X 22” Oil & Acrylic by Asmi Udassi Maa Durga depicted as “Beauty” embellished with jewelry & adorned with extravagant attire, reflecting Courage through her expression.

Asmi invites everyone to visit the exhibition & enjoy the artworks, but her underlying intent is to make the audience realize that courage and determination lie within each and every one of us. The biggest challenge that we all face is to overcome our fears and insecurities, we all are at war within our minds day in and day out. All we need is to invoke our inner courage to battle against the demons that lie within us.

So let us all get together to celebrate the beauty of Maa Durga and to feel the courage that she reminds us to display. Asmi would like to request everyone to share their stories of courage and be a part of the movement.

After all, we all have a Durga within us!!
