“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn”. This quote by Einstein best sums up our efforts at teaching the children about our environment.

The pleasantly cooler Saturday morning of 7th December 2023, saw a large number of Indian families armed with gloves, trash pickers and tongs descending on the scenic black sand beach of Lung Kwu Tan in the remote area of Tuen Mun to help create a cleaner Hong Kong. The youngest beach cleaner was 3 years old and the oldest was a senior citizen. The energy and the enthusiasm of the team was infectious.

This beach cleaning activity was organized by We the Solution, a registered charity in Hong Kong in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong’s Clean Shores Initiative.  In fact, this was the third beach cleaning activity conducted by We the Solution over the past two years, the first two being on To Tau Wan Beach in Wu Kai Sha.

We the Solution conducts Beach cleaning both as a critical environmental initiative and as a community service. Through experiential learning, it aims  to teach children in particular the importance of protecting our environment and to create a ripple effect in the community for positive change.

We the Solution is a registered society set up by an all women team in December 2016.  In 2023 it received tax exemption status from IRD, HK under Section 88. WE in We the Solution stands for women’s education. Believing in the adage  ‘If you educate a woman you educate a family’ our team’s mission is to support the education of girls in India as India has a higher drop-out rate among girls after primary education and also to contribute to Hong Kong community through projects that have educational value.

Projects in India:

We the Solution is currently running the ongoing projects in India:

  • College Education of Visually Challenged Girls by contributing towards their college fees at Sahana Charitable Trust, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Professional Education of Merit Students who are economically disadvantaged by supporting their education in engineering (8 students) and medical students (5 students) at Foundation for Excellence, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Education of Special Needs Children by contributing towards the salary of teachers at Sri Arunodayam Charitable Trust, Chennai.

Projects in Hong Kong

We the Solution is currently running the following projects in Hong Kong by contributing towards the work of the following NGOs:

  1. RainLily, Hong Kong, (Sexual Violence Crisis Center)
  2. CODA HK Ltd (Skills training for children of deaf parents)
  3. Hong Kong Women Workers’ Association

In addition, We the Solution also runs adhoc projects that contribute to Hong Kong Community: In 2023 Basic Beautician Course for Ethnic Minority Women in collaboration with Freedas Limited Beauty Salon and English Speaking Skills Enhancement at a local school in collaboration with Inspire2Aspire were organized. We the Solution has also run collection

drives distributing masks during COVID pandemic, distributing books, clothes and groceries to local charities that support communities in need.

In order to run and sustain ongoing projects as well as adhoc projects, We the Solution holds fund-raising events showcasing the talents of local artists.  Over a span of seven years, four fundraising events have been held featuring multicultural dances, percussion instruments and a talent show. All the funds raised support the projects. We the Solution has so far run with zero admin costs with all the office bearers working as volunteers.
