Jashan: A complete authentic Indian cuisine experience in Hong Kong

By Editor's Desk, January 17, 2019, Categories: Reviews

Constantly being praised as being Hong Kong’s best and most authentic, this week, I finally had the chance to visit Jashan restaurant. The restaurant, located in Central on 23 Hollywood, 1/F Amber Lodge was easy to get to and before I even reached the first floor, I could already smell the aroma of authentic India.

Established in 2003, the idea behind the restaurant was always to make space for and celebrate authentic Indian cuisine in Hong Kong and if I must say so myself, they’ve managed to do that beautifully. The interiors are welcoming and comfortable with brightly lit walls and a lot of golden-hued décors.

As an Indian myself, I know Indian food all too well and the food at Jashan was undoubtedly one of the most authentic Indian food I’ve had at a restaurant. From the aroma to the colour and to the taste itself, the chefs at Jashan do justice to the claim of being an authentic Indian restaurant.

When it comes to the food, the creamy Butter Chicken is a popular choice. If you are anything like me, this one will definitely get your taste buds going. Additionally, the staff recommended I try the Pesto Mushroom and they definitely did not fail me. It was a refreshing take on mushrooms and made me forget about the usual distaste I have for mushrooms. The Mirchi Chicken Kebab is heaven for anyone who instantly moves to the non-vegetarian section on a restaurant’s menu.

On the drinks menu, the refreshing Bengali Shikanji mocktail and their signature Zabardast Thandai cocktail are a must-try for those like to mix up the flavours a little. Even though I had heard quite a lot about it, I never got around to trying so, for dessert, I ordered the Paan ki Kulfi and was super impressed with the chefs for bringing that authentic Indian paan taste to a kulfi.

Even though it is an Indian restaurant, Jashan attracts the locals, the tourists, the expats and the local Indian community. And to cater to the different taste palette, due to the kind hospitality of the staff, the food is always modified based on the reviews and requests from the guests, so no need to worry if you are not a warrior with spices.

So, if you are someone who is looking for the authentic Indian experience, from the décor to the hospitality to the food, Jashan is the place for you!
