Jet Airways, grounded!

By admin, March 28, 2019, Categories: Featured, slider, Top Story

For us, desi Hong Kongers, a direct Jet Airways flight from India isn’t an option anymore. As of 23rd March, Jet Airways isn’t accepting reservations from Mumbai or Delhi to Hong Kong.

In India, flights of all airlines are being repeatedly rescheduled as Jet Airways struggles to take off. No matter where you are flying, passengers have been told to keep checking their flight timings on account of so much rescheduling. Given the crisis and cancellations, airfares are sent soaring!

The story so far:

  • The 25-year-old airline is burdened with a debt of over USD 1 billion. Payments due to banks, suppliers, pilots and other staff have been delayed.
  • The airline is currently operating only 41 aircraft from the 119 of its original fleet. And more cancellations continue.
  • Stranded and frustrated, passengers are demanding refunds. Many are taking to social media to voice their anger.
  • Pilots threatened to go on strike, over due salaries, from 1st April if the company does not have a rescue plan in place by end of this month.
  • Last week, Indian government called for an emergency meeting. The government asks state-run banks to rescue Jet Airway from bankruptcy, as PM Modi seeks to avert thousands of job losses before the upcoming elections.
  • The airline’s biggest shareholder, Etihad is exiting. The middle eastern carrier has offered to sell the 24 percent stake to the State Bank of India.

Speaking to Karen Singh, who is celebrating her 40th birthday in Goa this weekend, “We’re a group of twenty people. We’ve not even booked Jet but our airline sends us repeated reminders to keep checking the flight timings as changes are expected. The timings were already changed twice and we still get messages.”

Back on the Hong Kong islands, we ran into a little trouble too. We are flying in star Indian cricketer Nayan Mongia for our box cricket matches next weekend. While we initially booked him a seat on Jet Airways, we had to now fly him on a different airline. Needless to say, a setback of time and expenses ensued. But all’s well that ends well (at least for us) – as we look forward to ABCS matches with Nayan Mongia!

Let us know if you have faced any issues with the ongoing Jet Airways crisis.
