We mourn the loss of Shri Manohar Parrikar

Sunday, 17th March 2019, India lost one of its best leaders – Defence Minister (2014-2017), four-times Goa Chief Minister and BJP leader Shri Manohar Parrikar. He dies at 63 after a prolonged illness. Parrikar was the living icon for Indian secularism. Months before his demise, clerics read the Koran at his headquarters and the state’s archbishop Filipe Neri Ferao appealed to the Catholic community to pray for him.

It was Parrikar who proposed the name of Narendra Modi as candidate for PM in 2013 elections. Remembering everyone’s beloved leader, the Prime Minister tweeted yesterday, “Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.” Later he also added, “Shri Manohar Parrikar was the builder of modern Goa. Thanks to his affable personality and accessible nature, he remained the preferred leader of the state for years. His pro-people policies ensured Goa scales remarkable heights of progress.”

And in another tweet PM said, “India will be eternally grateful to Shri Manohar Parrikar for his tenure as our Defence Minister. When he was RM, India witnessed a series of decisions that enhanced India’s security capacities, boosted indigenous defence production and bettered the lives of ex-servicemen.”

A graduate in metallurgical engineering from IIT Bombay, Parrikar joined the RSS at a young age. He later went on the become Goa’s CM and then the Minister of Defence in 2014. Parrikar helmed the Uri surgical strike in 2016. In the 2018 movie based on the Uri attack, Marathi actor Yogesh Soman portrayed the role Manohar Parrikar with an uncanny resemblance.

His powerful statement, “We don’t itch for a fight, but if someone looks at the country with an evil eye, we will gouge his eyes out and put them in his hand,” is remembered today.

The tricolour will fly at half-mast today in the national capital and the capitals of states and union territories. Goa state government announced a seven-day mourning period from today.
