Dear Readers, Shubh Deepawali! This is a special edition issue of A-Desiflava magazine. As we enter the festive season of 2024, Indians globally are preparing for this joyous time, with Navaratri, Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, and I’m sure everyone’s favorite festival—Diwali—right around the corner.

Diwali always fills me with joy and gratitude; there’s something about this festival that marks a time of connection. Reflecting on my celebrations, I think fondly of the times I’ve spent with my family and friends, the lighting of diyas, designing rangoli, and the bright lights hanging off every family’s balcony. I wanted to encapsulate the emotions behind Diwali for this issue—the innocence, the fun, and the festivities. While many consider Hong Kong a small city, few things bring people together quite like cultural celebrations. I initiated a call for our readers to join in on this issue by submitting Diwali-themed drawings, poems, and wow! We got an overwhelming number of contributions. Initially, I considered featuring all the drawings together for the cover story, but ultimately chose a warm, inviting image of a family to capture the essence of Diwali this edition.

As we turn the pages in this new issue, you’ll encounter insightful articles divulging into a few important themes: racial equality, characterization, and stress. I wanted to bring forth the importance of cultural acceptance in this print. Living, studying, and working in a predominantly Chinese society can be isolating for some, but fear not. I’ve featured a profile on Niru Vishwanath, a manager at the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), and her journey on closing the gap between communities in Hong Kong. The EOC has been doing some great work, especially for racial inclusivity in schools lately. This Diwali, remember your roots, yet don’t forget to share them.

Wishing you a Diwali that’s sparkling, full of love, laughter, and light. Let’s burn the old and welcome the new this season. May this issue
