Hong Kong prepares to host a spectacular showcase of Punjabi culture as international teams converge for the ultimate Bhangra showdown.
Bhangra is a highly energetic and vibrant folk dance and music tradition that originated in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. Historically performed by farming communities to celebrate the spring harvest festival of Vaisakh. Since then, it has evolved into a globally recognised cultural phenomenon. The dance is characterised by its powerful, joyful movements, including jumps, kicks, and rhythmic shoulder shrugging, all synchronised to the beats of the dhol (a double-headed drum). Dancers typically wear brilliantly colored traditional attire that highlight their sharp motions. Today, Bhangra is much more than a harvest celebration; it is a profound expression of Punjabi heritage, resilience, and community that unites people across the world at weddings, celebratory gatherings, and international competitions.

Taking place on August 16, 2026, at the Jockey Club Auditorium at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, this competition will feature four incredible teams. Dancers are flying in from across the globe to compete for the championship title. Beyond the fierce competition, the event will proudly feature a heartwarming folk performance by a talented local team and a special showcase by children, highlighting the passage of this rich tradition to the next generation.
Adding to the prestige of the event is a star-studded lineup of special guests who will be gracing the stage. The audience will be treated to the vocal talents of rising star Gurprit Gill and the thunderous, traditional beats of phenomenal Dholi Balwinder Kumar. Furthermore, honourable actor Jarnail Singh will be attending as the Chief Guest, bringing a touch of cinematic grandeur to the cultural festivities. A prominent figure in the Punjabi film industry, Jarnail Singh is celebrated for both his acting and production work. Since making a strong mark in cinema with films like Jatt & Juliet 2 (2013) and Disco Singh (2014), he has built an impressive filmography that includes hits such as Punjabian Da King (2015), Harjeeta (2018), Maurh (2023), and Mittran Da Challeya Truck Ni (2024). Beyond his on-screen roles, he has achieved significant success behind the camera, serving as an executive producer and producer on numerous major Punjabi projects.
